Fillings are the fix for decayed cavities in teeth. When you get a cavity, there is an area of damage in a tooth that needs to be cleaned out and filled up so that it can be restored to its normal function and shape. A filling will also avert further decay by closing the entryway where bacteria is entering the tooth.
There are several kinds of materials used for fillings. The type you might get depends on factors your dentist will discuss with you. These include gold, porcelain, composite resin (for matching tooth color), and an amalgam (made up of mercury, silver, copper, tin and/or zinc).
Types of Fillings:
Amalgam fillings are the least expensive and nigh invulnerable to wear. They are noticeable due to their dark color, so they are normally put in back teeth where they may go unseen.
Composite resin fillings are used to duplicate the natural color of your existing teeth. So, they are put on teeth that are the most visible. The cons to composite resin fillings are that they can stain and don’t last very long compared to the other types of fillings.
